A fire safety plan includes elements from the following categories :

• Compartmentalizing belongs to the category of construction and mechanical means for the purpose of limiting the impact a fire to the area or compartment where the fire started.
• Detection provides detection and signaling of a fire, thus allowing for early intervention and/or extinguishing.
• Automatic and/or manual alarm systems.
• Manual and/or automatic extinguishing systems that minimize the impact of a fire.
• Links to other technical systems that should take care of smoke exhaust, shut down of HVAC systems and fuel supply, ...
• A number of organizational measures that include intervention (at three different levels) and evacuation (in accordance with existing security procedures).

The organizational elements must be supported by adequate procedures concerning alarms, interventions, evacuation and recovery as well as adequate programs for training and drills.
